JOB DESCRIPTION:
Manages and performs ground-based Land Mobile Radio (LMR) and microwave (MW) communications systems planning, systems design, cost estimation, implementation, installation, radio frequency management operation, support, and problem solving. Ensures quality communications infrastructure, deployment, optimization, training and operations are performed as directed or required in support of current and future program requirements. Some international travel is required. Radio engineering prediction and coverage tools and software, drafting software like ConceptDraw or Visio will be used regularly in the design phase of assigned projects.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Technical management of radio systems and sub-system design and implementation.
- Coordination with and oversight of LMR and MW vendors.
- Preparation of equipment and system specifications, cost estimates, and detailed purchase orders for LMR and MW systems.
- Design of LMR/MW site support equipment suites (shelters, power and grounding systems, tower emplacements, etc.)
- Performs preventative maintenance checks; advises and supervises other on-site personnel in the installation and operation of communications equipment
- Use of applications/programs for radio propagation prediction models, interference analysis, frequency planning, and coverage analysis for LMR and MW backhaul system.
- Daily monitoring oversight of DMR Tier III, TETRA, and supporting microwave backhaul systems
EDUCATION:
A Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical or Electronics Engineering, Computer Engineering ,or Electronic Technology, or related Physical Science (such as Math or Physics) from an accredited college. Ten (10) years of LMR/MW experience at the level of Senior Telecommunications System Engineer/Senior Radio Systems Engineer may be substituted for a degree.
REQUIRED SKILLS:
- Experience with Digital Mobil Radio (DMR) Tier III, TETRA, and/or P.25 trunking LMR systems.
- Experience with licensed-band microwave backhaul network design, implementation, and troubleshooting.
- Experience with Radio site infrastructure requirements, design, and implementation.
- Experience with Command and Control Centers and related dispatch equipment.
- Experience with MS office (advanced level) tools, radio coverage software tools, and drafting/diagramming software tools.
- Strong organizational, project management, interpersonal and communication skills.
DESIRED SKILLS:
- Prior military or police, including direct support to military or police communications operations.
- Prior overseas experience and experience instructing foreign military and/or police personnel.
- English and a Secondary Language capability
- Experience with GIS and mapping tools
