JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Air Force Technical Applications Center (AFTAC) is tasked with monitoring compliance with existing and future nuclear weapons test ban treaties.  To perform this mission, AFTAC uses the United States National Data Center (US NDC) system to receive, compile, and analyze seismic, hydroacoustic, and other data from the US Atomic Energy Detection System (US AEDS).

The scientific/geophysicalstaff shall have demonstrated a command of theoretical and applied geophysics, earthquake seismology, microseismicity, crustal studies, and the application of seismology/acoustics to monitor nuclear test ban treaties.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Translating customer scientific integrity and accuracy requirements to USNDC system performance.
  • Development, participation in, and oversight of a comprehensive science-based system tuning effort.
  • Liaison for incorporating third party algorithms, software and knowledge into the US NDC.
  • Participating in Air Force Research Lab (AFRL) and Department of Energy (DoE) Seismic Research Review and other scientific and technical meetings and workshops.
  • Participate in and/or lead applied scientific studies aimed at improving the speed, accuracy, effectiveness, and relevance of the US NDC system for meeting customer requirements.

EDUCATION:

Ph.D or Masters Degree in Geophysics, Seismology, Hydroacoustics, Applied Physics, or some other relevant field.

REQUIRED SKILLS:

  • Experience with conducting scientific research, development of seismic monitoring systems, or signal processing and analysis.
  • Experience in some or all of the following; ground-based nuclear explosion monitoring techniques, explosion source phenomenology, and development, validation, and use of complex earth models.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Strong presentation skills.
  • Ability to work within a customer environment under demanding conditions.

DESIRED SKILLS:

  • Experience with real-time earthquake monitoring systems.
  • Experience with C, C++, FORTRAN, Lisp/Scheme, Perl, and other programming and scripting languages.
  • AFTAC experience.

OTHER:

  • US Citizenship required.
