JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Air Force Technical Applications Center (AFTAC) is tasked with monitoring compliance with existing and future nuclear weapons test ban treaties.  To perform this mission, AFTAC uses the United States National Data Center (US NDC) system to receive, compile, and analyze seismic, hydroacoustic, and other data from the US Atomic Energy Detection System (US AEDS).

The scientific programming staff members shall have demonstrated a minimum of 10 years documented scientific programming experience with real-time multi-dimensional digital signal processing (detection, feature extraction, etc.), automated seismic event formation, seismic event magnitude/yield estimation, statistical event classification, linear and vector algebra, Fourier/spectral analysis or related scientific programming along with appropriate technical credentials (education or certifications).

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Programming and debugging of scientific processing algorithms.
  • Developing test routines for software fixes/changes.
  • Researching scientific algorithm changes and updates.
  • Compiling study results to warrant incorporation of new routines into the operational system.
  • Working in a disciplined configuration management environment.

EDUCATION:

Ph.D or Masters degree in a scientific discipline, preferably with an emphasis in geophysics, seismology, numerical wave propagation/modeling, digital signal processing, statistics, or similar field.Bachelors degree with 5 years of relevant practical experience as a suitable substitute.

REQUIRED SKILLS:

  • Strong scientific, programming, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple tasks with competing priorities.
  • Must be able to interpret technical data.
  • Ability to work within a customer environment under demanding conditions.
  • Experience with C, C++, FORTRAN, Lisp/Scheme, Perl, and other programming and scripting languages.
  • Experience with Oracle/SQL databases, database schema, and triggers.

DESIRED SKILLS:

  • High level of proficiency with Microsoft Office products.
  • Real-time seismic or scientific monitoring system experience.
  • AFTAC experience.

OTHER:

  • US Citizenship required.
